art : don't miss The Unilever Series: Rachel Whiteread More so than any of the previous Unilever series, Embankment facilitates comparison between Unilever’s sponsorship and the philanthropic bequest of Henry Tate. This shouldn’t be a surprise however, as Whiteread’s work has long been known for fitting into it’s location conceptually as well as visually. As a sculptural installation the piece has a calming presence, perhaps on two accounts. One being that these polystyrene casts of the insides of boxes have a translucent quality and so defuse the light, giving themselves softer edges and few shadows. But they also have an unexpected impact on the acoustics of the hall. Sound becomes softer, slightly dampened and walking amongst them the echoes of the hall become background compared to the more local sound of people amongst the piece itself. Questions about what could be, or have been, ‘in’ the boxes and questions about cultural references are there but do not detract from the effect of the multiple - 14,000 of them to be precise. KM |
