cinema : features Cool Cinemas One of the best things about the London film scene is the cinemas themselves. Amongst the grotty local flea pits and generic multiplexes there are some real gems that make going to the flicks a delightful event. THE PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA (Leicester Square / Leicester Square tube) An eclectic mix of one off screenings, seasons and events, this central venue is a unique experience. Quirky and innovative, it's the only non-subsidised repertory cinema in the UK, and has amazingly low ticket prices. Also the venue for Sing-a-long-a-Sound of Music, if you like that sort of thing. ELECTRIC CINEMA (Portobello Road / Ladbroke Grove tube) Crazy cool cinematic luxury, with posh sofas and leather armchairs, this is for those of you that want to make a style statement, not just see a film. PHOENIX (52 High Road / East Finchley tube) If it's retro excellence you're after then look no further. Full of historical interest and operating as an independent cinema since 1910, even the projectionist has been working there for 42 years man and boy. Yet the programme remains as contemporary as they come. RENOIR (Brunswick Centre / Russell Square tube) For those of you who can tell your subtexts from your cultural resonance, this is pure art-house chic. Part of concrete architectural gem, the Brunswick Centre, you might struggle to find a non-subtitled film in the programme, but just think how cool you'll look standing outside. AD |
