Chas 'n' Dave

As some of you might or might not be aware, Cockney Geezers Chas and Dave will be performing onstage at Glastonbury this year. But did you know they invented Punk and Gangsta Rap as well as teaching the world to play snooker?

First things first, which one is which? Chas is the slightly bigger one who plays the piano and Dave is the thinner one on bass. According to rock historians, punk began in 1976 with the explosive Sex Pistols. But they are wrong. Bearded wonders C&D penned the first ever punk rock anthem entitled Gertcha in Edmonton in 1973 and went on to perform it to packed out audiences at the 100 Club on Oxford Street. Like the Sex Pistols they also got into hot water for swearing on live TV with the phrase "cow son", an early twentieth century English version of the American "son of a bitch" and therefore inadvertently invented Gangsta Rap!

They were also responsible for reinventing the traditional FA Cup song for their beloved Tottenham Hotspur with their rockney style - a combination of music hall meets rock ’n’ roll piano. One of their most famous music affiliations has to be with Eminem. During the 1970s they were serious session musicians and performed instrumentals on the Labi Siffre track I Got The. This was heavily sampled by Eminem on his break through hit My Name Is. Other fans include Pete Doherty, which led them to supporting The Libertines at the Brixton Academy in 2003. That’s enough from me "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit", but one last thing. Chas and Dave is also cockney rhyming slang for shave, and all night rave.
