clubs + bars : our favourites

DJ Lord Ant B's Gimme 5 Lush DJ Bars

Are pubs the new clubs? These happening bars certainly think so.

MONKEY CHEWS
2 Queens Crescent, NW5 / 020 7267 6406 / Kentish Town tube
Crazy name , crazy nights. It's been going for four years now and functions as a mild-mannered bar/restaurant much of the time. But a slightly out-of-the-way location means that some very full-on parties can be held here. I have witnessed the bar literally being drunk dry! This comfy spot offers bargain cocktails, dark nooks and crannies (Hmmm! watch it cheeky!), a friendly atmosphere, hot house music and just the right amount of sleaze.

THE LOCK TAVERN
35 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 / 020 7482 7163 / Chalk Farm or Camden tube
DJ Jon Carter enjoyed drinking here so much that he decided to buy the pub. As you'd expect, what with Carter, his wife Sara Cox, and their cronies spending a fair amount of time here, the clientele includes a fair number of musos and media types. Regular DJ nights taking over the bars impressive sound system include the legendary Sunday Best on the third Sunday each month and We held the mother of all new years parties for them last year.

THE WHITE HOUSE
68 Clapham Park Road, SW4 / 020 7498 3388 / Clapham Common tube
One of south London's smarter nighttime venues, the White House straddles the pub/club border with ease. Until about 10pm, its seems just like any other stylish joint. Then the crowds appear and the music gets louder. Drinking and dancing are always at the top of the agenda. Friend - Felix from Basement Jaxx DJ's, as well as occasional appearances from DJs Graeme Park, Norman Jay and even Boy George.

THE VIBE BAR
91 -95 Brick Lane, E1 / 020 7377 2899 / Aldgate East tube
Like an expensively distressed pair of ripped jeans, the Vibe Bar effortlessly passes off its run-down state as a sort of designer squalor. It always looks as though it might be about to fall apart but somehow sticks together. There are big tables and a decent number of staff to speed serve you. Afro Fiesta throw an amazing live percussion nite twice a month and there is always a regular roster of decent DJs and interesting one off events.

CHERRY JAM
52 Porchester Road, W2 / 020 7727 950 / Royal Oak tube
Brought to you by Jay Hanman and Ben Watt (of 'Everything but the girl' fame), who also brought you Lazy Dog at the Notting Hill Arts Club, this place was always going to be cool. A very mixed crowd shows that Cherry Jam has managed to lure punters from outside West London, which is a feat in its self. Cherry pickin' choice!

And remember kids "When is a club not a club? When its a Pub! Hey Baby I'll have a Babycham!!!" AB
