clubs + bars : our favourites

DJ Lord Ant B's Gimme 5 Clubs on the Edge

You're thinking cocktail bars, you're thinking Soho. We all know about those trendy bars in the centre of town: Lab on Old Compton Street, the Met Bar in Mayfair, and The American Bar at The Savoy, but there are also some very fine cocktail bars further out of town too. Here we present you with our favourite 5 cocktail bars outside of central London.

BAROQUE
94 Uxbridge Road, W13 / Ealing Broadway tube and 5 Streatham High Road, SW16 / Streatham Hill train station
These two cocktail bars are probably the best drinking dens in Ealing and Streatham. They both serve fine food, and have comfy sofas, offering plenty of respite from the bustle outside.

BRIXTONIAN HAVANA CLUB
11 Beehive Place, SW9 / Brixton tube
This hidden gem in Brixton is always tricky to find: I've spent half an hour circling the Recreation Centre in a seemingly endless attempt to get to it. However, you will be rewarded with great music and lovely cocktails in a laid back atmosphere. The room is an old attic with the DJ hidden amongst the rafters, providing plenty of entertainment. Service is slow but the drinks are worth the wait.

CUBANA
48 Lower Marsh, SE1 / Waterloo tube
Although this bar is only 5 minutes from Waterloo tube, you could be forgiven for missing it. The bar has good deals in the early evening, when it tends to get crowded with after work revelers. However, the food is very good, and the front garden adds extra needed space to sit back and sip your Cosmopolitan. They even have live Salsa on some nights.

DUSK
339 Battersea Park Road, SW11 / Battersea Park train station
You may have heard of the Dusk bar in Marylebone, but this bar in Battersea Park seems to be a closely kept secret. It has all the features of the best bars in town (an extensive list of cocktails, lots of hidden nooks and crannies and friendly service) in a most unlikely place.

EQUAL
68-70 Honor Oak Park, SE23 / Honor Oak train station
Perhaps even more unexpected than Dusk (see above) is Equal. Honor Oak Park is hardly known for its night life, but you will find a great little bar in this most suburban of South East London locations. The bar is cosy, and the service friendly, but the highlight is the tastiest, freshest cocktails in London. It's a bit of a trek, but always worth the trip.
