DJ Lord Ant B's Gimme 5 Soho Hotspots
Are you in Soho and needing a dance? Are you short of
cash? Then look no further...
BAR RUMBA
36 Shaftesbury Avenue, W1 / £3 - £10 / Leicester
Square tube
Some of the best dancing in town is to be had in this long established
basement club. Gilles Peterson's long running jazzy, funky Monday niter
THIS! (That's How It Is) has a large and loyal following. Meanwhile Movement
is a storming drum'n'bass blowout, and there are also excellent one niters
to be had all through the week.
CAFE
DE PARIS
3/4 Coventry Street, W1 / Free - £10 / Piccadilly
Circus tube
Both top and tragic nites have taken place over the years in this art
deco ballroom, a popular haunt for dressy punters. Twisted cabaret nite
Merkin does Vegas with Pam Hogg and Boy George is worth a peek-a-boo.
Saturday nites are a bit more lounge-core conventional.
GHETTO
5/6 Falconberg Court, W1 / £3 - £7 / Tottenham Court Road
tube
This intimate, central club hosts a truly dizzy array of nites: indie
and nu-metal (Mon), pop (Tues), electro - Nag,Nag (Thurs). The Cock well
& trully puts the hot spunk back into Soho on Fridays and on Saturdays
there's the long running Trash nite Wig Out.
MADAME JO JOs
8 Brewer Street, W1 / £5 - £8 / Piccadilly Circus
tube
This great venue is enhanced by a touch of cabaret sleaze. There are some
promising mid week funk and hip hop nites, but the big draw is Keb Darges
Deep Funk.Funky chicken heads move'n'groove furiously to obscure '60s
and '70s cuts.
ROUGE
144 Charing Cross Road, W1 /
£10 / Leicester Square tube
This fab four-room venue has witnessed various reincarnations over the
years but the latest version is both big & bouncy. It combines beautifully
decorated boudoir bars with cool warehouse dance areas. The well designed
space is a must have treat for anyone despairing of the cheese fest to
be found around Leicester Square. The music tends to lean towards vocal
led house, whilst it attracts a glamourpuss crowd.
