Great record shops

If you are thinking of buying some new CDs, a favourite old tune, or that rare vinyl bootleg, then look no further than our guide to some of the best places to buy your records in London.

Fopp
Earlham street / Covent Garden tube
Mmmmn Fopp! Don't go their if you're in a hurry because hours can be wasted checking out one of the best music shops in London. The new chart releases etc. are reasonable priced (£10-£12) and their old but classic albums vary in price but are mostly between £5 and £7. But their real bargains are evident in their books, dvds and videos which are sooooo cheap. Fopp is disorganised and messy, it's busy busy busy and it's go go go. But its worth it!

Music and video exchange
Portobello Road and Camden High Street / Notting Hill and Camden tube
This chain has been around for years and is a haven for all music enthusiasts. It's cheap and you can usually pick up a good bargain anywhere in the shop. The best bargains are CDs which you can pick up for about a fiver (depending on condition) and LPs range from £2 to £12 depending on rarity, condition etc. (I even bought the best of Chas and Dave for a pound!). The videos and dvds etc. are also really cheap. The only problem is that you have to depend on people selling their sacred CD collection to get any real bargains (and who could part with the best of Donny Osmond? Not me that's for sure!). They obviously also buy CDs but try not to go down this route as you don't get much for them (50 LPs for £3 - I haven't forgotten!). The one in Camden is nice but Notting Hill is better with separate shops depending on genre and era etc. A great shop.

Honest Jons
Ladbroke Grove / Ladbroke Grove tube
The thing you get at Honest Jons is service. They are polite and don't talk down to you. Honest by name honest by nature. They sell great records and showcase young local talent mostly on their label (co-owned by none other than Damon Albarn!). Honest Jons is reasonably priced and run by legends.

Rough Trade
Covent Garden / Covent Garden tube
The famous rough trade label have their own sunny shop in Covent Garden but blink and you'll miss it (shit missed it!). The label that has spawned none other than the Smiths, and more recently The Libertines, has a great little shop selling mostly their own label but not exclusively. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and they make great compilation albums that you quite honestly need. DC
