Meet the Editor of Found magazine
At londonlostandfound we bring you the best of what’s
going on in London, but we also want to suggest things you might not have
heard of, or know about, or thought of doing. But we are not alone in
our mission to put a different perspective on life in a big city; there
are other alternative magazines out there. The second in our five part
series on alternative magazines is an interview with Jason, Editor of
Found magazine.
Can you briefly describe Found magazine?
FOUND Magazine is this sprawing collective art project which collects
found notes and photos and to-do lists and shares the best with all our
friends around the world. Sometimes they're these devestating break up
letters, or maybe deep and intimate love notes, and sometimes they're
these goofy photos from drunken parties. We choose our favorites and put
them together as magazines and books and records and on our website (www.foundmamgazine.com)
or wherever they should have a home.
What inspired you to start the magazine?
Back in 1999, FOUND point guard Davy Rothbart came across this note
tucked under his windshield wiper that said:
Mario,
I fucking hate you
You said you had to
Work then whys
Your car HERE
At HER place??
You're a fucking
LIAR I hate you
I fucking hate you
Amber
PS Page me later
After a while we figured out a bunch of people have these
found things stuck to their refrigerators, so we thought it'd be a good
idea to make a place to share them all.
What has been the most bizarre thing you have been
sent?
We get so many odd things over here-- we once got a what-do-you-call-it?
a lamprey, preserved in formaldehyde, with 'lazy and lethargic' written
on the lid of the jar... and we get lots of pervy pictures of old men...
my favorites tend to be the mysterious ones-- finds that just don't make
sense. Like, how did this kid's homework end up behind a strip club?
What's the story here?
What has been you favourite feature?
My favorite finds have a big emotional punch, like notes talking
about new love, or cheating, or some devestating breakup. MY best find
came last year I was heading to a neighborhood bar when I came across
a crumpled note crammed into a chainlink fence. I mean, it was really
wadded up tightly. When I unfolded it I discovered the following. (see
the attachment). It's the perfect love note.
Where do you see the magazine in 5 years?
You know, we started the zine as if it was gonna be fifty copies of a
single issue and then it snowballed into this strange international project
with thousands of people particating... I dunno where the magazine will
be in five years, but I, for one, hope to be playing bacarat in Monaco.
What is your favourite thing about London?
The BBC! Can't get through my day in Chicago without the BBC news
reports...
What do you hate about London?
I hate that London isn't closer to Chicago. Oh! And when I was thirteen
I was riding around the subway and some old pervy man grabbed my ass while
I was getting off the car. I was just a kid! Not that I hold it the city,
but that really makes an impression on a young un!
