unusual : wormholes

God bless London's independent art galleries! The Whitechapel, which has an illustrious history of exhibiting international artists for the first time in Britain (including Frida Kahlo, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock) has been a favourite of East Enders since its opening in 1901. There are currently ambitious plans (costing £10 million) to take over the library next door, and double its size.

As well as hosting a whole range of international contemporary artists, the gallery also has an extensive education and events programme. In addition to free workshops and talks, the gallery has introduced a new series of late night events on Thursdays and Fridays. These events take place in the lovely modern cafe, and include live music, poetry and DJs.

We couldn't resist including the late nights in this issue, simply for the titles:

Welcome to the SNUG / Thu 9 Mar @ 7pm / Free
Live poetry with Soul Cyde's funk grooves, Byron Vincent's struggles as a self confessed chav and Polar Bear's tight rhymes hosted by Mr Gee.

Paraphernalia + Burnell Hunt Duo / Thu 16 Mar @ 7pm / Free
Compelling art-school rock dynamics with an underworld charm. Plus electro-acoustic landscapes inspired by the mighty oboe, delightful toy instruments and unexpected percussion! Fun with toys. Yeah!

The Wormhole Saloon / Fri 17 Mar @ 7pm / £5
An eclectic night of interaction across three rooms. A surround sound room with live soundtracks and performance to visuals, interactive installations, and a plug 'n' play room - bring any instrument with a lead and play.

All events take place at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, 80 - 82 Whitechapel High Street, E1 (Aldgate East tube). For more details of late night events, visit: http://www.whitechapel.org
